In this post, i will dissect the concept of the agenda. I will present my opinions about why it is a bad concept these days, how it is harming us and the world and how can we minimize the damage it inflicts. This will be a serious post.
Let's go back in time a little bit, in order to deeply analyze this question. For example, let's go to 1700s where the technology was not advanced and communication was not that fast. We don't have to know a lot of history, let's take the French Revolution for example. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest events of that century. Well, do you think it happened in 1 day? Definitely not. You can assume with the priors and afterwards, it might have taken 2-3 years or so. So maybe around 2 years, the agenda of people was this huge revolution.
As you can understand, it didn't start in a day or end in a day. People were busy with this news for a long time. Also, maybe the events are spread to the far away villages or cities after 1-2 weeks or maybe heard after couple of days. Just like nature phasing through states, the events were delicately propagating. And you probably know the novel Les Miserables. Who knows how many books of life experiences may be hidden in those events which we content ourselves with 2 words.
Let's move forward in time and come to 1900s years. Let's think about a vast event of that century, in which technology is somewhat advanced but communication is not that much widespread. It could be a world war or a local battle like the Gulf War or death of a scientist ..etc. As our communication got faster and faster, the time started to move faster and faster. This gave way to a new world, where the agendas can change quickly and propagated quickly. Events started to take place frequently and rapidly. So the concept of agendas gained a new property called temporariness.
On the other hand, the population of the world is increased significantly over the years. If, for a random example, we think about the Korean war, a lot of people probably were not even concerned by it, even though the world was moving towards to globalization. I'm not judging this behaviour. At the end of the day, for example a European country had their own issues at hand. Of it was not relevant to them more than a headline in the newspapers. This situation started giving locality to the concept of agenda. Everyone started to be busy with their own daily issues.
Now let's come to the 2K years. Communication is very fast, our facilities are plenty enough and we are very crowded in this world. We are discovering something or spreading death and destruction everyday somewhere. And because of the definitions of temporariness and locality, it is hard to define what agenda is these days. Because a small event in a small vicinity can only be an event. It needs to infuse the societies conscious or physically impact them, in order for something to be a matter of agenda. The events that should have been agendas these days are destined to be mere events.
Let me give you some bad examples of news around the world that i can remember in couple of years. Some lunatic assaulted a school and killed children in USA, another crazy person killed many people in France after a concert, Russia invaded Ukraine, Turkey had 22 martyrs in one night in Northern Iraq, also Turkey experienced February 6 earthquake, Japan experienced an earthquake and a tsunami... These are the first ones i can come up with, and i am sure you have many of these sad events in your mind. Now think, how many days an american were bothered with the earthquake in Turkey? Or how many days a Turkish person talked about the disaster in Japan? How many days the world talked about Ukraine? Either nobody cares about anybody or they have their hand full of their troubles.
But i think, we actually became both neglectful and busy with our problems, even though there may be books of stories hidden inside all these events. We just summarize the situation with a couple of words and be done with it. Even more, our own countries big events and agendas are dissolving with the news of the next day. This is a little bit normal in the age we are living in. The news are not traveling in a week like in the older days. We are able to acquire lots of information almost instantly from everywhere. How much can we keep the agendas alive?
Humans must act like organs of a human body, when one gets sick, others must be effected too. We are living in globalization age but we are withdrawn into ourselves at the same time. I am writing this post right after Israel brutally hit the Rafah border on 26th of May and killed the immigrant civilian Palestinians. We are seeing Israel is able to commit war and humanity crimes day by day. The cabinet is carrying on with genocidal acts on Palestine since the events of October 7th 2023 (and probably long before), while the whole world is watching. Many historical crimes were committed during this time but everyone were forced to concentrate on their own agendas eventually.
We are not achieving anything with our social media posts in these days, since the concept of agenda has temporariness and locality and is basically ineffective. Some people design our agendas somehow and we are bound to go with the flow of daily news. Also, i don't think we, usual people, will never have the power to determine agendas in this world, by ourselves individually. But i have a solution for these problems that come with temporariness and locality.
